Language Competence
The most essential competence you need in order to receive your certificate of 'peopling' is the language. One can only get so far with hand motions before communication erodes into archaic, robotic information-giving and receiving. The Oral Proficiency Interview, although very nerve-wracking over the phone, consistently simulates the fast flow of fluent talking and listening, the nervous tension of being evaluated, and the unexpected brain lapses that a language barrier often elicits. The Writing Proficiency Test accurately evaluates one's proficiency in the language because one cannot use Google Translate during the test ;) and gives randomized topics on which to write. For example, not everyone could express themselves well in a second language when the subject of the conversation is education reform.
Unfortunately, there is no official Listening Comprehension Test for Portuguese speakers. However, the NCSSFL-ACTFL Can-Do Statements provide a precise self-evaluation list in which one may recognize past conversations that execute the specific listening proficiency requirements. For this cause, I have included these three official tests to prove my competence in the language. These abilities were successfully used to chat with strangers on the bus during my internship in São Paulo. OPI RESULTS |
Listening Comprehension Test
EXPLANATION OF PERSONAL EVALUATION:
According to the NCSSFL-ACTFL Can-Do Statements on the Interpretive Listening website that can be accessed below, I would rank myself as Advanced High with the one exception of being able to understand a televised exposé on celebrities as heroes. First, I am not capable of keeping up on the latest U.S. celebrity news. When it comes to Brazilian celebrities, I know of Ronaldinho, Xuxa, and Pelé. As for the superior category, I would be incapable of understanding a lecture on my favorite subject (science) understanding the points of view of a televised political debate between candidates running for office.
